"ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು" ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಹೇಗೆ ಬಂತು?

         ಸ್ಥಳನಾಮಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಭೂಭೌತಿಕ ವಿಶೇಷಗಳಿಂದ ವ್ಯುತ್ಪತ್ತಿಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ.  ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತ ಬೆಣಚುಕಲ್ಲುಗಳು  ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇರಳವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ತುಸು ಪ್ರತಿಫಲನ ನೀಡುವ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬಿಳಿಯದಾದ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಅವು. ಬೆಣಚು ಎಂದರೆ ಬೆಳಕು ಎಂದರ್ಥ.  ಬಿಳಿಕಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳಕಿನ ಅಂಶ ಸೇರಿರುವುದರಿಂದಲೇ ಅವನ್ನು ಬೆಣಚುಕಲ್ಲು ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.   ಬೆಣಚು+ಕಲ್ಲಿನ = ಬೆಂಗಲ್ಲಿನ+ಊರು  = ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಎಂದು ನಿಷ್ಪನ್ನಗೊಂಡಿರಬೇಕೆಂದು ನನಗೆ ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೆಣಚುಕಲ್ಲನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಲ್ಲು ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಬಹುವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಚಾರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ  'ಬೆಂದಕಾಳೂರು'  ಎಂಬುದರಿಂದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಎಂಬ ಶಬ್ದ  ನಿಷ್ಪನ್ನಗೊಂಡುದಲ್ಲ; ಅದು ಬೆಣಚುಕಲ್ಲಿನ   ಊರಾದುದರಿಂದ "ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು" ಆಗಿದೆ ಎಂದೇ ನನಗೆ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Tulu & Kannada poetry competition awards

       An international Tulu / Kannada poetry competition awards function organised by the Bahrain based Kanchana Foundation at the local auditorium of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy in Mangalore today, was presided over by its former president Dr. Vamana Nandavara. He said in his address that a budding writer should be well informed to achieve success. Writers seeking perfection have to read and study continuously in their lives, he added.
      Vi. Ga. Nayak, a writer and Chief Guest, told the audience that literature alone rectified the mistakes creeping into spoken Kannada language. Appreciating the present efforts at writing through competitions, Nayak asked the younger Tulu/ Kannada writers to polish their language and literature by cultivating an interest in them

         Karwar Akashvani Director, Dr.Vasanth Kumar Perla and researcher, Dr. Vasanth Bhardwaj Kabbinale, were present as chief guests. Winners of competitions held in last May 2010 were given their awards on the occasion. Awards in 3 categories had Rs.10000, Rs.7000 and Rs.5000 in cash with citations and mementoes. 10 budding writers were picked up for consolation prizes of Rs.2000 each. In Tulu poetry, M. Rajendra Kedige and in Kannada Poetry, A. Hameed Pakkaladka were awarded the first prizes.

for AIR, Karwar and discussed at – length about the total development of the constituency.

Introduction about myself



NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF POETS

     Recently I have participated in the National Symposium of Poets conducted by Dept. of  Kannada and Cullture, Govt. of Karnataka at Ravindra Kalakshetra, Bangalore. I have represented KANNADA LANGUAGE.

     SOME MORE INFORMATION ABOUT MYSELF

     Some of my writings have been taken to school, college and University Text books.  Interviews and programmes on my life and works were telecast by Doordarshan, Udaya and many other TV channels.  I had been on the Academic Council of St. Alosyius College, Mangalore, a deemed Institution, for the period 2007-09.  I am a successful Radio Broadcaster for more than 23 years,  written and produced over one hundred features, directed and broadcast over hundred Radio plays, interviewed more than one thousand  personalities.  Conducted several workshops for script writers and promising poets.  Trained and brought-in-to light more than five hundred writers and poets.  My lyrics have been set-to tune and broadcast by different AIR stations and telecast by Doordarshan centres.  I had a rare opportunity to serve in the Rojgar Yojna at PMO on deputation, about 3 months during 1989 when late Rajiv Gandhi was the PM.

    I was in the advisory committee of Labour Education for the period 2004-07 and also advisory committee member of Total Education Schme of Govt. of Karnataka for the period 1994-97. And also member of 'Kannada Jaagruti Samithi' (of Kannada Abhivruddhi Praadhikaara) at Hassan for the period 1997-1999.

     My wife K. Shailakumari  is a Post Graduate in Library Science and Mass Communication.  She is a writer and poetess and  also an artist of Carnatic Classical music. Besides she writes coloumns and criticism about performing arts such as Bharathnatyam and Carnatic classical music. My daughters Artha(18) and Ayana(16) are writers both in Kannada and English and artists of Bharathnatyam and classical music.   Son Aagamakrishna  is young (5 yrs)  and attending UKG at Mangalore.

     I have been served at AIR, Mangalore, Hassan, Mysore and again at Mangalore. Last three-and-half years back I was transfered to AIR, Karwar and now again transfered to AIR, Mangalore.
